Biopolymer film for food packaging-film supplier

In order to achieve all these goals, multilayer films combining various material properties are often used. Currently, most technical films are still made of plastic polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Manufacturers are bound by the 'Packaging Law' that took effect in 2019, requiring that the proportion of recycled packaging materials be increased from the current 36% to 63% in the future. Therefore, the sustainability of the packaging material industry becomes more and more important, and renewable or recyclable materials, biodegradable and/or bioplastics will become more and more important in the future. Its mission is to pioneer material innovation, identify alternatives to traditional polymer substrates, including barrier layer materials, and develop products based on these materials. The ideal new materials that are biodegradable, easy to recycle, and/or made from renewable raw materials also help to find alternative recycling methods and save resources in production. 1. Biopolymer-based multilayer film Fraunhofer Institute for Materials and Systems Microstructure (IMWS) in Halle, Germany, is committed to achieving this goal and cooperated with Polifilm Extrusion Company in Weissandt-Gölzau, Germany. A research project that lasts until August 2021: Scientists will jointly manufacture biopolymer films for food packaging that meet complex requirements, can be produced more sustainably, and are easier to recycle. The goal is to design and manufacture new and innovative multilayer films based on biopolymers with various barrier properties and functional film surfaces for packaging materials. 2. Efficient barrier properties and mechanical stability Dr. Sandra Richter, Fraunhofer IMWS project manager, explained: “We intend to design a multilayer film made of biopolymers that not only has efficient barrier properties , But also has good mechanical stability and sufficient transparency, and has other characteristics important for its further use. 'The barrier properties of innovative films should be achieved by the purposeful combination of biopolymers and the introduction of oblate-shaped fillers. . The project partners also plan to equip the film surface with antibacterial properties. This will be achieved through the modification of chitosan or chitosan derivatives, which are made from chitin through multiple processing steps. 'Chitosan is a natural substance extracted from the shells of shellfish. Therefore, we use another natural raw material to modify the biopolymer film. In addition to the antibacterial effect, chitosan also has a high degree of biocompatibility. It is biodegradable, non-toxic, and can also serve as a natural barrier.' Richter said. It is planned to introduce chitosan into the outer layer of the packaging film. It can be laminated as a net-like surface cushion layer, or it can be deposited on the film as a wet chemical coating. The industrial technology that the project partners intend to develop should be able to produce a large amount of biopolymer packaging film. Third, the non-destructive diagnosis method Another goal is to design a non-destructive diagnosis method that is particularly suitable for multilayer films, and to provide the thickness of each film layer and the discovery of adhesion defects that may be caused by delamination or occlusion. In this way, it can be ensured that even new biofilms can be tested in a manner suitable for industrial processes and meet the necessary quality requirements.
